Aandeel van Islamitisch extremisme in terroristische aanslagen, 2004-2007 - in Irak.
VRAAG: Wat is het aandeel van Islamitisch extermisme in dodelijke burgerslachtoffers door terroristische aanslagen - in Irak?
Vergelijking tussen de aantallen dodelijke slachtoffers van 'algemeen' terrorisme en terrorisme dat Islamitisch geïnspireerd is.
In Irak tijdens Operation Iraqi Freedom en Operation Enduring Freedom.
Periode: 01-01-2004 t/m 30-12-2007.

Enkele highlights uit deze resultaten:
We hanteren hierbij een maximale waarde voor de foutkans (alpha) van 5 procent als criterium voor de significantie van de afgeleide populatie-correlatie.
Daarnaast hanteren we een maximale waarde voor de foutmarge (epsilon) van 5 procent als criterium voor de betrouwbaarheid van de geschatte 'N=1' steekproefwaarde t.o.v. het populatiegemiddelde.
Verder hanteren we een minimale waarde voor het betrouwbaarheidsinterval (Confidence interval) van 95 procent.
Conclusies:
• De hoeveelheid dodelijke burgerslachtoffers als gevolg van terroristische aanslagen, blijkt in Irak
in de genoemde periode 'slechts' voor 30% terug te voeren op Islamitisch geïnspireerd geweld.
Het grootste deel, 70%, is verklaarbaar uit andere motieven en actoren. Anders gezegd, het is níet zo dat
de meeste terreur in Irak die burgerdoden tot gevolg heeft, door Islamisten wordt gepleegd.
Dit beeld komt redelijk overeen met de cijfers over het wereldwijde terrorisme.
• Wel is het in Irak zo, in de genoemde periode, dat maar liefst 87% van de Islamitische terroristische aanslagen leidt tot burgerdoden. Slechts 13% leidt tot doden onder niet-burgers. Met andere woorden, àls Islamisten terroristische aanslagen plegen met doden tot gevolg, dan betreft dat erg vaak burgers. In een Islamitisch land als Irak zullen deze burgerslachtoffers - ironisch genoeg - bijna altijd mede-moslims zijn ..
• Het gevonden verband in de steekproefgegevens blijkt zeer hoog significant van toepassing op de totale populatie.
• De mate van gevonden samenhang is echter nogal gering: de geschatte populatie-correlatie is nauwelijks 0.17, en de proportie voorspelbare populatie-variantie blijkt maar 2,8%.
• Voor een willekeurig individu in de populatie van dodelijke terreurslachtoffers is de kans maar 5,3% groter dan toeval (50/50) dat de dader Islamtisch geïnspireerd was.
